When The Mayo was undergoing extensive renovation and reconstruction in 2003, one of the primary considerations was the replacement of the 55-year-old Venetian stained glass ceiling panels that comprised the skylight over the Grand Lobby of the Mayo. A local Tulsa artisan was contracted to exactly recreate the design of original panels using modern space-age lightweight plastics and and aluminum in the precise proportions required for each individual panel in the iron frame of the skylight. After months of meticulous labor measuring, cutting and assembly, the new panels were installed.
All the original panels were replaced, including some which had been lost, deteriorated, or damaged over the years. The result is a much safer, lighter, more translucent skylight in bright vivid colors that rivals the original Italian art glass over the Grand Lobby.
Further, we have a very limited number of intact stained glass panels available to be deaccessioned from the Mayo Museum inventory. They are available from The Mayo Hotel Tulsa Museum Store for a tax-deductible contribution of $30,000.00 to aid in the support the Mayo Museum Tulsa.
We have written an article about the process of reconstruction, replacement, and installation of the skylight here.
Original Servidor Valet Access Hotel Doors
When The Mayo was undergoing interior demolition and reconstruction in the early 1980s,
several of the interior doors were removed and stored. These were custom
designed doors, unique to The Mayo Hotel, and based on a similarly designed door
used in The Plaza Hotel in New York City. Many of the interior design
aspects of The Mayo was derived from The Plaza, as it was considered to be the
finest hotel in the country at the time. One of the amenities considered
desirable was the "valet closet in a door" concept, where a hotel valet could
remove and replace clothing items laundered and pressed by other hotel staff --
all without disturbing the occupants of the room. This provided both
security and privacy for the occupants. A limited number are currently available from The Mayo Hotel Tulsa Museum Store Original Period Photographs and Postal Cards We have a number of original period photographs,
