"The Hot Kid" Author Elmore Leonard At The MAYO!
Mayo News

Elmore Leonard will be at the Mayo Hotel to sign copies of his newest novel The Hot Kid in the Grand Lobby of the Mayo on Thursday, May 12, 2005 from 7:00 PM. The author will be reading selected passages, followed by a signing session. The event is open to the public.

An exerpt from the New York Times book review (8 May 2005) is shown below. The remainder of the review is available at the NYT website. You must register on the site to read the review, registration is free.

Elmore Leonard may have more kinds of fans than any other writer in America. He's beloved by the millions of satisfied readers who reliably propel each of his books onto the best-seller lists; by the Hollywood types, whose zeal for Leonard's novels seemingly burns in inverse proportion to their ability to make anything but turkeys out of them; and even by the literary establishment, including writers like Martin Amis, Saul Bellow and Ann Beattie, who have in effect awarded Leonard, a crime novelist, an honorary membership in the Serious Authors' Club. He holds the same chair that used to be occupied there by Chandler, Hammett and Ross Macdonald.

hose words were first spoken in 1925. Soon after, the Mayo brothers erected what was then the tallest building in Oklahoma. The photographer has arrived, but Mollie Williford's hair just isn't perfect yet.

Jaymie Mathena, armed with a comb and a can of hairspray, leans toward the lady and her jet black dress, making sure every single hair is in its proper place.

Among those waiting behind them this afternoon at the Mayo Hotel, 115 W. Fifth St., are Lillian Mayo, Angie Debo and Sharon King Davis, each one ready to have her picture taken.

Some of lost splendor restored in old hotel

The elevators don't work, so if you want to see the top floor, you take the stairs -- 18 flights up, and the tour guide never slows down to let you catch your breath.

Somewhere near the 14th floor, it's only natural to start doubting that it's really worth all this effort.

Well . . . it is.
